SPICON
SPInning CONical Ring — Oblique Flange Technology for Maximum Spindle Speed
SPICON (SPInning CONical Ring) — precision oblique flange ring for Ne 20–100+ counts. Two-piece design, 1010 HV hardness, Ra 0.041–0.049 μm. 4–5× more ring-traveller contact area than T-flange: less heat, higher speeds, better yarn quality.
Product Overview
SPICON stands for SPInning CONical Ring — the name describes the oblique (conical) profile of the ring's inner race surface that is the defining feature of this design.
The SPICON ring is built on a principle first conceived by Soviet Union engineers in the early 1960s — the oblique flange ring, known in scientific literature as the "SU ring." Unlike the conventional T-flange ring, the oblique (angled) race surface of the SPICON provides approximately 4–5 times more contact area between ring and traveller. This dramatically reduces surface pressure at the ring-traveller interface, which is the primary thermal bottleneck limiting spindle speed.
With lower surface pressure, the traveller generates less heat, enabling significantly higher spindle speeds with no increase in traveller wear. RGPL's own mill trials confirm spindle speed gains of 6–13% over T-flange rings while simultaneously delivering better yarn quality — fewer neps, lower hairiness, and fewer thin and thick places.
The inner support ring (the second piece in SPICON's two-piece design) eliminates the oblique flange ring's historical weakness: yarn unthreading during machine stop-start. The support ring prevents the yarn from slipping inside the ring during stops, virtually eliminating this class of end-breaks.
Laboratory-verified: Hardness 1010 HV (Silver Crown Metal Coatings, Coimbatore); Surface Roughness Ra 0.041/0.047/0.049 μm (Roots Metrology, Coimbatore).
Important: SPICON's oblique race profile is not compatible with standard T-flange travellers. It requires dedicated oblique-flange travellers — Bracker (Switzerland) travellers are recommended. These must be imported, which increases traveller cost compared to regular Indian travellers. Mills should factor in Bracker traveller pricing and lead times when planning a SPICON installation.
